Falmouth MA History: Things to Do in Falmouth MA

History

A Little Bit of History...

Native Americans were the first inhabitants of Falmouth and knew this town before it was incorporated, in 1694 as  Succonessett.

Succonessett is translated as “the place where the black clam is found.”

In 1602 Bartholomew Gosnold from Falmouth, England landed on our shores and named the beautiful peninsula Cape Cod.

Things to Do in Falmouth

Falmouth has been gifted with miles of shoreline and Martha’s Vineyard is a mere 5 miles away.

Our visitors love to meander the Historic Village of Falmouth, where there are Sea Captain’s homes, lovely gardens, charming B&B’s and many festivals throughout the year.

The Falmouth Road Race attracts runners from every part of the world which happens every August. Also, the Shining Sea Bike Path winds from Woods Hole to North Falmouth and is a favorite for viewing Salt Marshes, quiet watersides, flora, and birds. And, at the end of your day, make sure you capture the essence of the sunsets at Nobska Lighthouse….Outstanding!

Our Farmer’s Market and open air concerts fill the air with that Olde Cape Cod feeling.

The 11 public beaches each have their own special appeal. The waters are warmed by our close proximity to the Gulf Stream.

Woods Hole with the Aquarium, the ever-changing exhibits, and its quirky little Main Street dotted with shops and waterside restaurants is a wonderful place to explore!

Woods Hole is renowned for its scientific community and includes the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, all of which host scientists from all over the world.

The Steamship Authority in Woods Hole and the Island Queen Ferry on Falmouth Harbor shuttle visitors back and forth to the Island of Martha’s Vineyard which makes for a fantastic day trip for all ages!

There is always something to do in Falmouth!

No wonder Falmouth is considered a top destination when visitors are seeking the perfect vacation spot!

Come and share our “Fabulous Falmouth” any time of year!
