Woods Hole's Off-Season Evenings Run on Two Science Auditoriums

From now until next June, most public evenings in Woods Hole happen inside two research institutions. The Marine Biological Laboratory hosts a free lecture on one Friday night most months at Cornelia Clapp Auditorium. The Woods Hole Film Festival screens independent films twice a month at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's Redfield Auditorium on Water Street. Both run on fixed hours, and a couple of village restaurants offer dinner deals built around them.

If you know which night belongs to which auditorium, it's much easier to plan a winter evening in the village. The schedule also shifts in late December, when one of the dinner partners closes until spring.

Fridays Belong to Clapp Auditorium

The Falmouth Forum is presented by the Friends of the MBL and has run for more than 30 years. Lectures are free and open to the public, both in person and online. Parking is free in any MBL lot, and you don't need to register to attend in person. Doors open at 7:00 PM and talks begin at 7:30 PM, unless an individual listing says otherwise. The venue is Cornelia Clapp Auditorium at 7 MBL Street.

Dinner is optional. A buffet starts at 6:00 PM at the Swope Center, 5 North Street, for $45 a person, or you can reserve a table of eight. Dinner tickets go on sale two weeks before each lecture. They're sold until they run out or until 5:00 PM on the Wednesday before, and none are sold at the door. So a Forum dinner has to be booked during the week, even though the lecture itself needs no planning at all.

The season opened on Friday, October 2, with columnist and author Troy Clarkson's talk "Shining Tiles: The People and Places that Make the Falmouth Mosaic," as reported by the Falmouth Enterprise. The rest of the season is on MBL's events calendar. Every remaining date falls on a Friday:

Date Speaker Talk
Nov. 13, 2026 Jennifer Madden, Heritage Museums & Gardens "Creating Cape Cod: The Evolution of Tourism"
Dec. 11, 2026 George Scharr, Cape Symphony Orchestra pre-concert lecturer "Chords and Chuckles"
Jan. 22, 2027 Eric Jay Dolin, author "The Wreck of the Mentor"
Feb. 12, 2027 Joanna Buchthal, Mice Against Ticks "Stopping Lyme at the Source"
Mar. 12, 2027 C.L. Fornari, author and radio host "A Garden Celebration: Learning From the Natural World"
Apr. 2, 2027 Elaine Weiss, author "Spell Freedom: The Underground Schools That Built the Civil Rights Movement"
May 7, 2027 Russ and Theresa Webster, authors "The Last Flight"
June 4, 2027 Sean O'Neill, Team USA Paralympian "Toward A More Accessible World Through Sport"

Several talks are close to home. Madden's covers how Cape Cod tourism developed. Buchthal leads Mice Against Ticks, and her talk is about stopping Lyme disease in the wildlife that carries it. The Websters' May lecture covers the Atlantic search for JFK Jr.

Saturdays Belong to Redfield Auditorium

Dinner & A Movie is the Woods Hole Film Festival's year-round independent film series. It screens twice a month from early fall to late spring and mixes films from the festival with titles chosen for the series. Screenings are held at WHOI's Redfield Auditorium, 45 Water Street. They usually start at 7:00 pm, and doors open 30 minutes earlier. The auditorium is wheelchair accessible, and hearing assistance devices are available on request. There's street parking in the village, and certain WHOI-run lots are free after 5 pm.

The next screening is this Saturday, October 17: Beyond the Duplex Planet, a new documentary by Beth Harrington. WHOI's calendar lists a 6:30 pm start for that night. After that, the festival's calendar shows Dancing on the Elephant on Saturday, November 14, at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $18 general admission and $10 for students and military. Festival members save $6 on year-round tickets.

The series doesn't include a meal in the ticket price. The festival has dinner arrangements with two village restaurants, Captain Kidd and the Quahog Republic Leeside Pub, and ticketholders get a discount at either one. The Leeside is at 29 Railroad Ave. At the Captain Kidd, 77 Water Street, ticketholders get 10% off the meal portion of the bill, not including alcohol. The festival suggests writing "Dinner and a Movie" in the special request field of the online reservation so the kitchen can time your meal to the screening. Groups of nine or more should call 508-548-8563. Diners should tell the restaurant they're going to the screening when they're seated and show their e-tickets to get the discount.

The November Weekend When Both Line Up

The Forum and the film series almost always fall on different nights, but in November they land on back-to-back days. Jennifer Madden speaks at Clapp on Friday, November 13, and Dancing on the Elephant screens at Redfield on Saturday, November 14. No other weekend this fall has public evenings at both auditoriums on consecutive nights, and neither event requires leaving the village.

Clapp has a busy weekend apart from the Forum. MBL's calendar lists the New England Immunology Conference in the same auditorium from November 13 through 15. Earlier in the season, OncoHeart 2026 meets there from October 30 through November 1. The room that hosts a public lecture on Friday evening is also used by visiting scientists the same weekend, which shows how fully the institutions use these spaces year-round.

December Starts Outdoors, Then Moves Back Inside

The first Friday in December is the only evening on this calendar that takes place outside. The Cape Cod Chamber lists Falmouth Holidays by the Sea for December 4 through 6, 2026. On the Chamber's tentative schedule, caroling in Woods Hole village is set for Friday, December 4, at 5:30 pm at Waterfront Park on Water Street, led by the Solstice Singers. The schedule is still marked tentative, so the Chamber's event page is the place to confirm it that week.

One week later, on Friday, December 11, the Forum returns indoors with George Scharr's "Chords and Chuckles." Scharr is the Cape Symphony Orchestra's pre-concert lecturer and the retired chair of the arts department at Falmouth Academy.

The festival's 2026–27 series page and calendar don't list a December screening yet.

When Captain Kidd Closes, the Dinner Options Narrow

The festival's own series page notes that Captain Kidd closes for the season from late December 2026 until late April 2027. That covers most of the film series' winter months. From January to spring, the Leeside is the only partner restaurant still open. Its own page lists it as open daily from noon to 9:00 pm.

The Forum isn't affected, because its buffet is held at MBL's Swope Center rather than at a village restaurant. The January 22 lecture, Eric Jay Dolin's "The Wreck of the Mentor," and the February 12 lecture on Lyme disease both fall while Captain Kidd is closed, and both will still have the optional 6:00 PM dinner on North Street.

For mornings, Pie in the Sky is open seven days a week from 5am to 8pm, 364 days a year, according to its own homepage.

The Daytime Calendar Between the Big Nights

Between the Forum and film nights, the Woods Hole Public Library runs smaller weekly programs. Its October calendar has Tech Time at 2 p.m. and the Knitting Group at 3 p.m. on Fridays, October 16, 23, and 30. Monday, October 26, is the busiest day this month. Monthly Mortality Movies starts at 3 p.m., the Journaling Club meets at 5:30 p.m., and Armchair Travel Talk: Greenland begins at 6 p.m. The Creative Living Book Club meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month, which this month is October 27 at 5:15 p.m.

The research institutions also hold daytime talks. MBL's calendar lists two SES Distinguished Scientist Seminars at Speck Auditorium, 10 MBL Street, both at 11:30 am, each with an online viewing link. On November 6, Adam Subhas speaks about ocean alkalinity enhancement for carbon dioxide removal. On November 20, Loren McClenachan speaks about historical marine ecology and conservation. WHOI's events calendar, which also posts the film screenings, lists department seminars most weekdays. Many are hybrid with posted Zoom links. One example is an AOP&E seminar on open science engineering on October 14 at 12:15 pm. On days with no seminars, WHOI marks the calendar with "There will be no seminars today."
